15 Days Tsum Valley Trek – Journey into Nepal’s Hidden Himalayan Valley

The Tsum Valley Trek is one of Nepal’s most beautiful off-the-beaten-path Himalayan adventures. Located in the northern part of Gorkha District within the Manaslu region, Tsum Valley is renowned for its spectacular Himalayan scenery, ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional villages and unique Tibetan-influenced culture.

Often described as a hidden or sacred valley, Tsum offers a peaceful trekking experience away from the busier Himalayan trails. The journey follows the Budhi Gandaki Valley before turning toward the remote Tsum Valley and continuing to villages such as Chumling, Chhekampar, Nile and Mu Gompa.

The highest point of the standard Tsum Valley Trek is Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 m, making it a challenging but achievable trek for trekkers with good fitness and proper acclimatization.

Tsum Valley lies within the Manaslu Conservation Area, which is known for its diverse Himalayan landscapes, wildlife, forests and traditional communities. Nepal Tourism Board identifies March–May and September–November as the best seasons for trekking in the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Day 01 :

Day 1: Kathmandu to Machha Khola

Altitude: Approx. 900 m
Drive: 7–9 hours

Your Tsum Valley adventure begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu toward Machha Khola. The journey passes through green hills, terraced farmland, rivers and traditional villages.

Overnight: Machha Khola

Day 02 :

Day 2: Machha Khola to Jagat

Altitude: Approx. 1,340 m
Trek: 6–7 hours

Begin trekking along the Budhi Gandaki River. The trail passes through forests, waterfalls, suspension bridges and small Himalayan settlements before reaching Jagat.

Overnight: Jagat

Day 03 :

Day 3: Jagat to Lokpa

Altitude: Approx. 2,040 m
Trek: 6–7 hours

Continue through the beautiful Budhi Gandaki gorge. After Philim, the trail gradually turns toward the entrance of Tsum Valley. The landscape becomes increasingly remote and spectacular.

Overnight: Lokpa

Day 04 :

Day 4: Lokpa to Chumling

Altitude: Approx. 2,386 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Enter the magnificent Tsum Valley. The trail passes through dense forests and dramatic mountain scenery before reaching Chumling, a traditional Tsumba village.

You can enjoy views toward Ganesh Himal and surrounding peaks.

Overnight: Chumling

Day 05 :

Day 5: Chumling to Chhekampar

Altitude: Approx. 3,030 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Continue deeper into the valley toward Chhekampar, one of the most culturally fascinating settlements in Tsum.

The trail offers spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayas while traditional stone houses, mani walls and prayer flags reflect the strong Tibetan Buddhist heritage.

Overnight: Chhekampar

Day 06 :

Day 6: Chhekampar to Nile

Altitude: Approx. 3,360 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Walk through the upper Tsum Valley toward Nile. The valley becomes increasingly rugged and alpine as you approach the Tibetan border region.

Overnight: Nile

Day 07 :

Day 7: Nile to Mu Gompa and Back

Highest Point: Approx. 3,700 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Today is one of the highlights of the trek.

Hike to Mu Gompa, the highest and one of the most important monasteries in Tsum Valley. Explore the monastery surroundings and enjoy panoramic Himalayan views.

Return to Nile for the night.

Day 08 :

Day 8: Nile to Chhekampar

Altitude: Approx. 3,030 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Retrace the scenic trail through the upper valley and return toward Chhekampar.

Take time to appreciate the traditional villages, monasteries and Himalayan landscapes that make Tsum Valley unique.

Overnight: Chhekampar

Day 09 :

Day 9: Chhekampar to Chumling

Altitude: Approx. 2,386 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Descend gradually through forests and mountain trails toward Chumling.

The lower altitude brings warmer temperatures and greener landscapes.

Overnight: Chumling

Day 10 :

Day 10: Chumling to Lokpa

Altitude: Approx. 2,040 m
Trek: 5–6 hours

Leave Tsum Valley and retrace the trail toward Lokpa. Enjoy the changing scenery as the route descends toward the Budhi Gandaki Valley.

Overnight: Lokpa

Day 11 :

Day 11: Lokpa to Deng

Altitude: Approx. 1,800 m
Trek: 6–7 hours

Continue along the Budhi Gandaki River through forests, suspension bridges and narrow Himalayan gorges.

Overnight: Deng

Day 12 :

Day 12: Deng to Namrung

Altitude: Approx. 2,630 m
Trek: 6–7 hours

The trail climbs gradually toward Namrung. Pine and fir forests dominate the landscape, while Himalayan peaks begin appearing more prominently.

Overnight: Namrung

Day 13 :

Day 13: Namrung to Lho / Syala

Altitude: Approx. 3,180–3,500 m
Trek: 4–6 hours

Continue toward the culturally rich villages of Lho and Syala. Enjoy impressive views of Manaslu and surrounding Himalayan peaks.

Overnight: Lho / Syala

Day 14 :

Day 14: Lho / Syala to Machha Khola or Lower Trailhead

Trek: According to road conditions

Descend toward the lower Manaslu region and continue by local transportation as road conditions permit.

Overnight: Machha Khola / suitable local lodge

Day 15 :

Day 15: Machha Khola to Kathmandu

Drive: Approximately 7–9 hours

After breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu. Your unforgettable Tsum Valley adventure ends with memories of ancient monasteries, traditional villages, Himalayan landscapes and the peaceful hidden valley.
