The Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote, adventurous and culturally fascinating Himalayan journeys. Located in north-western Nepal, Dolpo is famous for its untouched landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist traditions, dramatic mountain valleys, high passes, traditional villages and the spectacular turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake.

The journey takes you deep into the Shey-Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park, where the landscape changes from pine and birch forests to high alpine meadows and dry trans-Himalayan terrain. The region is home to rare Himalayan wildlife and centuries-old Tibetan-influenced culture.

Dolpo is ideal for experienced trekkers looking for an authentic wilderness adventure far from Nepal’s busy trekking routes. The classic Upper Dolpo journey combines the beauty of Phoksundo Lake, Shey Gompa, ancient villages, high mountain passes and the remote Dolpo landscape.

Phoksundo Lake

Phoksundo Lake is the natural centerpiece of the Dolpo Trek.

Its deep turquoise-blue water, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and Himalayan wilderness, makes it one of Nepal’s most spectacular high-altitude lakes.

The lake is located within Shey-Phoksundo National Park, which Nepal Tourism Board identifies as one of the major attractions of Dolpo.

Nearby Ringmo Village offers an opportunity to experience traditional Tibetan-influenced architecture and local culture.

Shey-Phoksundo National Park

Shey-Phoksundo National Park is Nepal’s largest national park, covering approximately 3,555 sq. km, with a buffer zone of about 1,349 sq. km.

The park contains a remarkable range of landscapes, from forests of pine, walnut, willow, oak and cypress to high alpine meadows and arid trans-Himalayan terrain.

Wildlife includes:

  • Snow Leopard
  • Himalayan Tahr
  • Blue Sheep
  • Musk Deer
  • Himalayan Black Bear
  • Ghoral
  • Leopard
  • Himalayan Wolf / Wild Dog
  • Marmot
  • Rhesus Monkey

Nepal Tourism Board records more than 200 bird species in the park.

Best Time for Dolpo Trek

Spring – March to May

Spring offers favorable trekking conditions, blooming alpine vegetation and generally good visibility.

Autumn – September to October

Autumn is another excellent season, with relatively stable weather and clear mountain views.

Nepal Tourism Board officially lists March–May and September–October as the best seasons for Shey-Phoksundo National Park.

Winter – November to February

Winter brings severe cold and snow to higher elevations, making the route significantly more difficult.

Monsoon – June to August

Some parts of Dolpo lie in the rain-shadow of the Himalayas, but access, flight schedules and trail conditions can still be affected by weather. A carefully planned itinerary is essential.
